Now that you know a bit more about the sports that are popular overseas, it is time to think about what is popular in New Zealand. For today, your challenge is to…
Activity 1
Take a picture of yourself participating in a popular New Zealand sport. On your blog tell us the name of the sport and why you have chosen it.

The sport I am playing with my friend is called Rugby. I have chosen it because I think Rugby is a great way to get exercise, and get outdoors..

Activity 2
Write a short paragraph describing your sporting hero. Who is he/she? Why are they your favourite sportsman?
Answer:
My favourite athlete has to be Valarie Adams, because she represents New Zealand. She is a well-known shot putter, who has won world titles for youth, junior and senior Levels. She is 32 years old, and her youngest brother (Steven Adams) plays for Oklahoma City Thunder.
Bonus Activity
According to the Love New Zealand website, the most popular sports in New Zealand are rugby union, rugby league, netball, soccer and cricket. In your opinion, which of these sports is the best one? On your blog tell us which sport you think is the best. Be sure to tell us why. Give us as many reasons as you can!
Answers:
In my opinion I think Netball is the best out of this list of sports. The first reason why I think Netball is the best sport is because men and women and play it. All of the other sports are just for men, which I think is unfair for women. The second reason why I think Netball is the best sport is because there's a lot of thinking, you only have 3 seconds to pass the ball! So you have to think fast if you want your team to win. Another reason why Netball is the best sport is because we get to work as a team. Most people in my class don't work in a team, they work individually. That is why I think Netball is the best sport.

Activity 1
Imagine that you are visiting on the national holiday of your chosen country. On your blog tell us what you would eat, see and do on that day.
Answer:

The National Holiday in Chile is called The Fiestas Partrias of Chile. I would probably watch some Chilean rodeos and dance the Cueca (A traditional dance.) In Chile there is this famous dish called pino. It is a mixture of beef and onions.

Activity 2
Create a brand new public holiday for the country. Use your creativity to come up with a name for the holiday and a short description of how people in the country celebrate the holiday. Do they all get the day off? Do they eat special foods or go to special events to mark the day?

Answer:

My brand new public holiday would be called "Creativity Day" it would be on May 23 and 24. Everyone gets a day off work. There is one rule to this special day, you must eat your favourite chocolate bar. On this day you have to have a big family get together and maybe have a bbq.

Bonus Activity

In New Zealand our national holiday is on 6 February. It is called Waitangi Day. What do you do to celebrate Waitangi Day? Do you go somewhere special? On your blog tell us what you do on that day.
Answer:
In my family when it's Waitangi Day, it's a day to relax. We all just do nothing all day, which is the best part! I know it sounds boring but it's actually relieving. Especially when my mum makes her famous honey and mustard covered roasted ham. Yum!

La, La, La...- Day 13

Although you had a very restful day yesterday watching TV you have woken up feeling quite tired. You decide to turn on the radio and listen to some music before you get up and get on with your day. When you turn on the radio, the first song that you hear is one by Justin Bieber, a musician from Canada.
Activity 1
Justin Bieber is arguably one of the most famous musicians in the world right now. He has had a number of hits, including the songs:
Watch the three videos. After you have finished watching them, rank them from #1 (best) to #3 (worst). On your blog, list the three videos in order from best to work and tell us why you have ranked them in that order.

Answer:

Love yourself - #1 - I rated 'Love Yourself' the best song because I think the words really mean something meaningful.

Sorry - #2 - I rated 'Sorry' the second best song because I think it has a really cool up beat sound, which is great for dancing.

Baby - #3 - I rated 'Baby' the worst song because I don't really listen to that song that much, so I have lost interest in that song.

Activity 2

Source: http://www.portableroadways.com/countdown-to-womad/
Every year there is a huge music festival held in New Plymouth, New Zealand. It is called WOMAD. WOMAD stands for ‘World of Music, Arts and Dance.’ The festival began in 1980 and there are WOMAD festivals held every year in Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Spain, Italy and The United Arab Emirates. They attract singers and performers from all around the world. Imagine that you are on the WOMAD organising committee for next year. Which two musicians/bands would you invite to perform? On your blog tell us the names of the two musicians/bands and tell us a bit about them. Where are they from? What kind of music do they play?

Answer:

If I were in the WOMAD organisation committee I would invite Jeremih. He is a singer-songwriter who has written many hit songs, such as 'Oui" "Love Don't Change" and "Impatient." He comes from Chicago, Illinois, United States. His genre in music is R&B and Hip Hop. I think both children and adults will love his music.

If I were to pick a favourite band, it would be Sons of Zion. They are a mixed group who has many different vocies that spices things up a bit. Sons of Zion are originally from New Zealand, and their genre of music is Reggae. I think they have great music that will get you singing along in no time.

Bonus Activity
There are literally dozens of different types (‘genres’) of music in the world, including classical, rock ‘n roll, Rhythm & Blues (R&B), pop, hip hop, rap, jazz, etc. Some musicians play on their own and some play as part of a band. Arguably, the most influential band of all time is The Beatles. They were a rock band from Liverpool, England.
Dozens of movies have been made about the band. The most recent was a documentary called ‘The Beatles: 8 Days a Week – The Touring Years.’ Watch the trailer for this movie.

After you have finished, tell us two things that you learned about the Beatles from watching this trailer. They can be any two interesting facts!
Answer:

I don't really know much about The Beatles, but I think I have learnt something from watching this trailer. The Beatles started off as a small group from Liverpool, England. To a massive group that went on many tours.

Another thing I have learnt from that trailer is that when The Beatles quit, the whole world went insane. There were bonfires filled with photos of The Beatles.

School Days - Day 10

After meeting with the local family yesterday you are inspired to learn more about how people live in different countries. You and your family decide to go out and visit a local market. When you’re there you meet a student who tells you all about what it’s like to go to school in their country. The student also gives you a page from their diary that shows you what a typical school day is like for them.
Here is an example of a school diary for a student from Germany.

Activity 1
Think about your school and what you typically do in a day. Compare it with the diary from the German student. What is similar? What is different? In your blog, tell us:
  1. Whether you would rather go to school in New Zealand or in Germany
  2. Why you feel that way
Answers:
One thing that I have noticed that was different was that Germany and my school both learn about different subjects.

1. I think I would rather stay in New Zealand.
2. I would rather stay in New Zealand because I have a great teacher there who teaches me everything I will need to know in the future.

Activity 2
Think about your favourite subject at school. In your blog tell us:
  1. The name of your favourite subject
  2. Why it is your favourite subject
1. My favourite subject in school is Reading.
2. I like reading because it teaches me more about other subjects, such as writing. Books teaches me new words to add to my vocabulary. Which is very helpful.

Bonus Activity
Once you have looked at the other school diary, it is time for you to make one of your own. What do you in a normal school day? Use the template below as a guide and post your own personal ‘Day in the Life of…’
