Day 1 - Winter Learning Journey 2017

Day 1: 100% PURE New Zealand
Date: Saturday 08 July

Well, the time has now come! School’s out for the holidays and your tour of New Zealand is about to begin. I hope that you are ready and excited! Curious Kiwi certainly is – he can’t wait to start the Great Kiwi Road Trip! Before you all hit the road, let’s take a minute to review some key facts about New Zealand.3.jpg

Activity 1:  Go to the Tourism New Zealand website and click on the ‘Facts - New Zealand People’ tab. Read about the people of New Zealand and then choose three interesting facts to post on your blog. The facts must be written in your own words. Do not simply copy and paste the facts from the website☺.
My Three Interesting Facts: New Zealand - People
* Voyagers Before Christopher Columbus discovered America, Maori people sailed across the seas in huge canoes. They became the first inhabitants of New Zealand.
* Inventers In the early twentieth century, kiwis have been inventing things in their backyard. The bungy jump is just one of our most famous invention.

* Exploring Kiwis love the great outdoors, camping and beach walks are just two of the most popular activities to do in Aotearoa.

Activity 2: Your tour of New Zealand is going to start right here in Auckland. Watch the Tourist video for Auckland to learn about the awesome things that you can see and do in the city. Once you’ve finished, choose your favourite five activities from the video and list them on your blog.

My Favourite Five: What you can see/do at New Zealand
* Auckland Domain Here you can experience the relaxed lifestyle. Watching the locals play cricket and enjoy the environment that surrounds you.
* Waitakere Ranges - Rain Forest You can drive to Waitakere Ranges where they have a native Rain forest. You can parade on their treetop bridge and explore New Zealand's exquisite greenery.
* Auckland War Memorial Museum This special museum holds all of the treasures of Aotearoa. You can still find the history of New Zealand and Maori culture displayed in the Museum.
* Sky Tower Hidden in this breath taking building (literally) you can base jump from extreme heights. Don't worry, there's another option if you rather just watch. You can watch below from the Observation Platform where you can, well, watch. Watch Auckland's central street.
Mount Eden Here you can (before sunset) hike/drive to experience the bright lights from the city's finest buildings. Fun Fact: Mount Eden is an inner-city volcano which hasn't erupted in over 15,000 years ago.

Bonus Activity: Now it’s time to start your tour! Curious Kiwi decides to start by taking you on a short tour through downtown Auckland. You stop at the Sky Tower, the tallest building in all of New Zealand. When you look up, you see a huge New Zealand flag on the top of the tower. This flag was created back in 1902. That makes the New Zealand flag 115 years old!

Last year, the Prime Minister of New Zealand suggested that we should replace the flag with a new, updated design. He invited everyone in New Zealand to come up with their own flag design and submit it.
For this activity, it is your turn to design a new flag. Use any drawing programme that you wish. I would recommend the Flag Designer website. It allows you to create a flag in three easy steps. When you are done, take a screenshot of your flag and post it on your blog. Here is an example:

To earn full points you must describe the flag, in words, below the picture. Please tell us what is on the flag and what inspired your design.
My Flag
My flag is quite simple, it represents the laid back lifestyle you can experience here in Aotearoa. The four blue triangles represents the most well known beaches (well at least the beaches I know the best.)
Piha Beach, West Auckland
Waihi Beach, Bay of Plenty
Raglan Beach, Waikato
Oreintal Bay, Wellington
The green X represents the land which separates the beaches. It also represents the beautiful landscapes and greenery you can see.
I didn't add a symbol because New Zealand contains all kinds of people/religions. From Catholic to Hindu, Aotearoa is proud to have these beautiful people living here.

Bonus Activity = 8 points

  1. Great job Aaliyah,
Nice to see you on the winter Learning Journey program! I like how you gave your reasons why you created the design of the new Zealand flag in your own version! Good on you!

  2. Kia ora Aaliyah and welcome back to the holiday blogging programme! It is so nice to have you back blogging with us once again :)

I hope that you enjoyed the first day of the learning journey. I really enjoyed reading your answers for each of the three activities, particularly activity #2. I actually live out west and love to spend time in the Waitakere Ranges. They are just beautiful. Once of my favourite beaches is out west. It's called Karekare and it's right beside Piha. You will actually have the chance to learn about it on Day #2 of the programme!

In the meantime, I hope that you are having a great break with your family and friends.

See you back online again soon (I hope)!

    Cheers,
    Rachel :)
