Packing up - Day 4

It’s official! You’ve chosen your country and bought your ticket. Now it’s time to pack for the big adventure! Think about where you are going and what the weather is going to be like when you arrive next week.
Activity 1
To find out more about the weather in your chosen country log onto the Accu Weather website [http://www.accuweather.com]. Type the name of the capital city of your country into the search bar. It will tell you what the weather is going to be like in your country of choice. On your blog, provide a five day forecast for the weather in the capital city of your chosen country.

Tuesday - 87 degrees (Pleasant and Sunny)

Wednesday -  87 degrees again (Pleasant with plenty of sun)

Thursday - 83 degrees (Dropped a little but still very hot)

Friday - 86 degrees (Warm and pleasant good for a picnic) \

Saturday - 83 degrees (Yay the weekend! Great for going out to the beach)

Activity 2
Before you start packing your suitcase you will want to create a list of everything that you will need to bring with you. Most airlines let you bring one big suitcase with you so you’ll have to think carefully about what you want to bring…

On your blog site, post a list of everything that you need to pack for your trip. Put a star (*) beside the 5 items that you think are the most important.
* Chile is going to be VERY hot, so I will need to bring some sun block
* The one place I would love to go to while at Chile is the beach. So I will need to bring some swimming togs.
* If I'm going to try and hike The Antofagasta I am going to need some Hiking Gear.
* I loved exploring at night, so The Easter Islands is a great place to go to. So I will need a flash light.
* Pucón is an exploring hub coverd in snow. I think it would be helpful if I brought along a warm jacket.
Bonus Activity
Make a word poem called a ‘wordle’ using your packing list (i.e. the list of of things you are taking with you on your trip). To make a wordle you need to go to the Wordle website [http://www.wordle.net/create]. Enter the words for all of your items into the box provided and click ‘Go.’ The website will create a wordle for you. Save the wordle and then post it on your blog.

  1. Kia ora Aaliyah,

This is actually one of the most interesting lists I have read so far. Not only did you provide what you are bringing, but you linked that to an individual activity which is actually very pragmatic.

Now, you know I am a teacher, so would you mind if I taught you a little something about how we measure temperature?

A long time ago, a Polish scientist invented the scale of Fahrenheit (which is what you're using in your screencap), using equal parts salt and water to make the temperature of 0 degrees on the thermometer (which was a 200 year old invention at that point, but he made a new version which used mercury - which made it more accurate). Then he used the average human temperature to make the high point of 96 degrees. And that is how the thermometer was marked so people could say what the temperature was. Sounds a bit strange, right?

Celsius, our measurement, was made because a different scientist thought 'Fahrenheit is illogical. Salt water, human body heat? What do they have to do with anything? Why don't we just use the freezing and boiling points of something easy, like water?' and so he made ANOTHER scale on thermometers called degrees Celsius!

And that's what we use today! So, 0 degree Celsius is when it is so cold that water freezes, and 100 degrees Celsius is when water boils. Cool eh? In Fahrenheit those are 32 and 212. Such random numbers!

I know that the website probably automatically went to Fahrenheit because it is an American one, so no worries, but there will be a button you can hit next time to change it.

Anyways! Keep up the great work! I hope my little story was interesting!

    Kia kaha,

    Mark

  2. Hi Aaliyah,

I'm so jealous of your trip to Chile, the weather looks like it will be amazing! I think we could use some of that weather here in Auckland with our summer. Also, how good is it that it will be sunny on the weekend for your trip to the beach?

Looking at what you're planning to pack for your trip, you've got some fun activities planned! I like how you have really thought about what you want to do while you're there, and then packed accordingly. That's smart thinking :-) I totally agree with Mark, this is definitely the most thought out list I've seen so far on the Summer Learning Journey. If you go exploring at night on the Easter Islands, what do you think you might see?

It's nice that you're travelling to somewhere that will be in summer like New Zealand is. One of my favourite things to do in summer is go swimming at the beach, especially if I can take a boogie board to surf the waves! Hopefully the beaches in Chile are fun to swim at too.

Another great entry from you Aaliyah, keep up the awesome blogging and commenting!

P.S. I really like your Wordle too! It shows me how active you're going to be when you are exploring Chile.

    Cheers,
    Dan.
