Activity 1

Think about all of the books that you have read this year and recommend one for Curious Kiwi to read. On your blog list the title and author of the book and then provide a short description of it. What is the book about?

The Wild West Gang   By Joy Cowley
The Wild West Gang is a series of books that is about six cunning kids who adventures are rather.....odd. Michael's five other cousins are crazy noisy and very messy. Michael stays with his loony cousins for a while, he then begins to feel like he was meant to be here. Even though his mother and father are very posh. Will his parents accept that he is turning into a wild animal?
Activity 2
Read the following three reviews of books that are really popular right now in Canada. If you had to choose one for Curious Kiwi to read on the plane, which one would you choose? Post the name of the book that you would chose on your blog. Below the title explain why you would choose that book.

Book 1: Catching Fire (The Hunger Games #2) by Suzanne Collins
Against all odds, Katniss has won the Hunger Games. She and fellow District 12 tribute Peeta Mellark are miraculously still alive. Katniss should be relieved, happy even. After all, she has returned to her family and her longtime friend, Gale. Yet nothing is the way Katniss wishes it to be. Gale holds her at an icy distance. Peeta has turned his back on her completely. And there are whispers of a rebellion against the Capitol - a rebellion that Katniss and Peeta may have helped create. Much to her shock, Katniss has fueled an unrest she's afraid she cannot stop. And what scares her even more is that she's not entirely convinced she should try. As time draws near for Katniss and Peeta to visit the districts on the Capitol's cruel Victory Tour, the stakes are higher than ever. If they can't prove, without a shadow of a doubt, that they are lost in their love for each other, the consequences will be horrifying.
Book 2: Matilda by Roald DahlC:\Users\rwil313\Desktop\Matilda book cover.jpg
Matilda is a sweet, exceptional young girl, but her parents think she's just a nuisance. She expects school to be different but there she has to face Miss Trunchbull, a kid-hating terror of a headmistress. When Matilda is attacked by the Trunchbull she suddenly discovers she has a remarkable power with which to fight back. It'll take a superhuman genius to give Miss Trunchbull what she deserves and Matilda may be just the one to do it!
Book 3: Diary of a Wimpy Kid – The Ugly TruthC:\Users\rwil313\Desktop\DoaWK image.jpg
Greg Heffley has always been in a hurry to grow up. But is getting older really all it’s cracked up to be? Greg suddenly finds himself dealing with the pressures of boy-girl parties, increased responsibilities, and even the awkward changes that come with getting older—all without his best friend, Rowley, at his side. Can Greg make it through on his own? Or will he have to face the “ugly truth.”

If I was to pick out of these three amazing books, it would have to be Matilda. Ir's a classic, I have always loved Roald Daul books and this one is one of my favourites. I think it's a great bed time story for everyone!

Bonus Activity
It’s time to use your imagination to write a short story. I’ve provided you with three different beginnings for a story. Choose your favourite beginning and finish the story. What happens next? You can use your imagination and create any ending that you want. To earn full points, you must post, at least 8-10 sentences, on your blog.

  1. I looked around the room. Nothing seemed unusual, but then…

  1. I knew it was going to be an unusual day when my mom came into my bedroom and said...

  1. The spaceship was out of control and only one person could save us....

I looked around the room. Nothing seemed unusual, but then I saw a huge spider. (Okay, I know spiders aren't that scary but this one was HUGE.) It was like a hairy book. I ran out of the room and grabbed a sandal and tried hitting it as far away as I could. It scrambled across the carpet, I dodged it but it was still in the house. Will I ever overcome my fear of Spiders? Find out in the next chapter (That I will never write.)

  4. Hi Aaliyah,

Thanks for all your book recommendations! I'm sure that Curious Kiwi will enjoy the books you've picked. The Wild West Gang sounds pretty interesting... When I was your age I used to read about a group of kids called The Famous Five, have you ever read any of those? They sound kind of similar! They always used to go on lots of adventures just like the Wild West Gang.

I'm SO glad that you chose Matilda for your book! I love that book too, and have always enjoyed reading Roald Dahl. Which one of his is your favourite? Did you know that when I first read Matilda, I spent the next month trying to move things with my mind just like Matilda could?? It took me a while to figure out I couldn't... Haha

That's a great short story you've written too. I can totally understand your fear of spiders! Whenever I find a big spider at home, I always get my partner Bridget to take care of them because I can't stand them! If you do feel like writing another chapter to your story sometime (even though you said you wouldn't) then I'd definitely like to read it :-)

I hope you're enjoying your holidays Aaliyah and getting to read lots of interesting books that you could recommend to Curious Kiwi. It's always a good idea to pack a few books when you're travelling for times when you're on a plane, or if you have a bit of bad weather and have to spend the day inside!

    Happy blogging :-)

    Dan.
