Now that you know a bit more about the sports that are popular overseas, it is time to think about what is popular in New Zealand. For today, your challenge is to…
Activity 1
Take a picture of yourself participating in a popular New Zealand sport. On your blog tell us the name of the sport and why you have chosen it.

The sport I am playing with my friend is called Rugby. I have chosen it because I think Rugby is a great way to get exercise, and get outdoors..

Activity 2
Write a short paragraph describing your sporting hero. Who is he/she? Why are they your favourite sportsman?
Answer:
My favourite athlete has to be Valarie Adams, because she represents New Zealand. She is a well-known shot putter, who has won world titles for youth, junior and senior Levels. She is 32 years old, and her youngest brother (Steven Adams) plays for Oklahoma City Thunder.
Bonus Activity
According to the Love New Zealand website, the most popular sports in New Zealand are rugby union, rugby league, netball, soccer and cricket. In your opinion, which of these sports is the best one? On your blog tell us which sport you think is the best. Be sure to tell us why. Give us as many reasons as you can!
Answers:
In my opinion I think Netball is the best out of this list of sports. The first reason why I think Netball is the best sport is because men and women and play it. All of the other sports are just for men, which I think is unfair for women. The second reason why I think Netball is the best sport is because there's a lot of thinking, you only have 3 seconds to pass the ball! So you have to think fast if you want your team to win. Another reason why Netball is the best sport is because we get to work as a team. Most people in my class don't work in a team, they work individually. That is why I think Netball is the best sport.

  2. Hi Aaliyah,

I agree that netball is a great sport. It's universal (i.e. both men and women can play it) and it's fun! Unfortunately, both my partner (Andy) and his son (Billy) have recently hurt themselves playing social netball so I'm a bit wary of it at the moment! Andy hurt his knee and Billy hurt his ankle. They have to take a few weeks off from playing but I would imagine that they will go back and play again soon. They love the opportunity that playing netball gives them to hang out with their friends and work together as a team to accomplish their goal.

Do you enjoy playing netball, Aaliyah? Does anyone in your family play netball for a team here in Auckland?

    Bye for now!

    Rachel :)
